РІР‚СљYesterday,РІР‚Сњ an obvious homage to the Beatles, sounds like Trent Reznor chewed up Paul McCartney and then vomited the bloody pieces back up into a microphone. The only time Imagine Dragons are worse than when they are being boring is when they try to experiment. Imagine Dragons probably think this is reminiscent of late 80s Genesis and Phil Collins, but itРІР‚в„ўs pure Tedder shlock. It is the backbone of every One Republic song, and now itРІР‚в„ўs on every second Imagine Dragons track as well. You know the one: a slow, heavy funeral dirge slog that automatically makes you picture an audience of middle-aged white people clapping along on one and three. Many of the tracks on Evolve rely on a distinctly Ryan Tedder-ish drum beat. ReynoldsРІР‚в„ў vocals are not the only thing that brings to mind other artistsРІР‚в„ў work. Why would anyone purposefully try to sound like Maroon 5? On other tracks, his vocal stylings are reminiscent of a less nasal Adam Levine. On several of the albumРІР‚в„ўs tracks, most notably РІР‚СљWalking the Wire,РІР‚Сњ he sounds uncannily like ColdplayРІР‚в„ўs Chris Martin. Throughout Evolve, lead singer Dan Reynolds imitates a string of more famous singers. With Evolve, they continue the trend, delivering an at time tediously dull, at times truly awful third studio album. For Imagine Dragons, this slide had already begun with their 2015 sophomore album Smoke + Mirrors. There are few things worse than watching a once promising band slide into mediocrity.
